The original Sonic code was up, down, left, right, A, Start.
I believe Sonic 2's was similar but it had another code too. Damn it's been awhile!
Either way, that code always reminds me of Sonic instead of the Konami games it is supposed to be for. =)

Let me clear everthing up. It's called the Contra code,(I know it was used for something else I think it was Quake) and it is
UP UP DOWN DOWN LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT A B START
This code gave you 30 lives in the Konami game Contra. And yes if you also hit select and have 2 players they both get 30 lives.

It's also the 30 lives code for Life Force; however in Gradius 3, you must substitute the L & R BUTTONS for the normal left & right d-pad inputs; otherwise you explode instantly after unpausing the game. Also, instead of 30 lives you get fully upgraded with sheild and options, and I think it actually COSTS you a life to do this. But it's SO worth it on the Fire level!

You can also use this code for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II The Arcade Game for the NES, another Konami game. It lets you choose what level to start out at, as well as how many continues. Man, I feel like I'm 8 again.

It's actually called The Konami Code, as the first game it worked for was Gradius and it has worked in numerous other Konami games including Contra.

WOW!.. a lot of 360 console kids here, it's CONTRA CODE!.. and yes Konami use it on other games, but it got it's fame from CONTRA. (a video game reference to Commando and Rambo movies at the time)
Know your roots Goddammit!...and if you didn't play CONTRA for some reason back then, then you were the loser!.
